'Are you going for the world-record?' A question that would put any sportsman under pressure and one that Charly was subjected to on a number of occasions after his success in Rome. In general Carl Kaufmann took a very relaxed view of championships and did not let the pressure get to him. The variations in his personal best-time from season to season are evidence that in normal circumstances it is not always possible to achieve a personal best and the best laid plans do not always come to fruition. He had certainly intended to make his mark at the 1960 Rome Olympics and despite an injury sustained in March of that year his preparation for the Olympic Games had been perfect. The worst moment of his career was in 1956 when he had to run the 200 metres against his will and his better judgment, in the process of which he sustained a torn muscle. The chances of him taking part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne were over, he was totally devastated.  After his triumph in Rome he wanted to achieve even greater things but further success eluded him.The pressures of work meant that he did not have enough time and the mental energy to train for competitive sport.
